Geography

At Glebe Primary School, we aim to provide the children with opportunities to develop their skills in Geography, and to widen their knowledge of their country and the wider world. We do this by planning topics throughout their time at Glebe that enable them to develop on the skills that begin in Nursery. Each year is then a natural step.

The children begin by looking at their local area, using their existing knowledge of Ickenham, and building on this by using a simple map to locate landmarks. This skill is taken further in later years to include comparisons of areas of the United Kingdom with contrasting countries, and to focus on case studies of countries including Australia and India.

Understanding the world around us and seeing how others lives helps the children to develop their natural curiosity, but also empathy. It also allows children whose families may be originally from abroad to share their own knowledge, experiences and culture with their peers.​

Natural Geography topics allow the children to further what they already know about features they may have heard about already, and begin to explain what causes them. These also continue throughout the years to broaden the children's knowledge, such as visiting the topic of volcanoes in Year 4, followed by 'Extreme Earth' in Year 6.

We are proud of our Geography curriculum, most importantly because of the excitement and interest that the topics create for our pupils.
