In Year 1 we ensure a smooth transition for the children from Reception into Year 1, so that children are happy and motivated to learn. They will experience fun, engaging, lessons in a more structured timetable, covering the subjects of the National Curriculum.
Our teachers are: Mrs Sheehan (Class 1S), Mr Curd (Class 1C) and Ms Arshad (Class 1A)
We are supported by: Mrs Fitzwater and Miss Anjum, with Mrs Christodulides, Mrs Verity and Mr Hamzaoui supporting individual children across the year group.
Mrs Chaudry is involved in teaching groups of children across the year group.
Your child will also be taught by Mrs Lenk, who teaches Mr Curd's class on a Tuesday afternoon; Mrs Chaudry, who teaches Mrs Sheehan's class on a Thursday afternoon; or Mr Perkins, who teaches Ms. Arshad's class on a Wednesday morning.

Key Vocabulary
Throughout the year, we will be introducing new vocabulary to the children as part of the topics they will learn. Please click on the links below to view specific vocabulary for each term:
Spellings
In year 1, the children will receive weekly spelling homework; a sheet with words to learn at home. Spellings are given out on a Wednesday and are tested on the following Tuesday. A spelling task is also set to help them learn the words and this task should be completed in their homework books.
Please see the link below for the year group spellings:
Phonics
Phonics is a big part of Year 1. Your child will continue to expand on their knowledge of phonics and will use this to develop their reading and spelling skills. A phonics session will take place each day and they will be grouped according to their needs, just like they did in Reception. These are fun sessions which involve games and tasks. They will learn tricky words, spelling rules and how to sound out and blend to aid them with their reading and writing.
The Year 1 phonics screening check is administered in June and tests children's knowledge of phonics through a mixture of real and nonsense words.
Trips
During the Autumn term, we will visit London Zoo to learn about different animal groups. In the Summer term the children will experience the Space Dome, where they will learn about the solar system.
